Review: Ultimate X-Men #20

Real Name: Professor Charles Xavier
Affiliation: X-Men
Relatives: Moira MacTaggert (ex-wife), David (Proteus, son, deceased)
Powers & History: Xavier possesses powerful telepathic abilities and very limited telekinesis. He is perhaps the most powerful mutant mind on the planet. Years ago, when Xavier met Erik Lensherr, they became close friends, each having finally found someone else as different as him. They were so close that Xavier left his wife and son to help Erik found a mutant community in the Savage Land. However, they were not close enough to keep Magneto from impaling Xavier with a metal bar when Xavier went against some of Erik's anti-human plans. Carried off by fellow human-sympathizers, Xavier lived, but was left crippled from the waist down.

He founded the X-Men to fight against Magneto, to promote positive human/mutant relations, and to train young mutants. In order to fund the school, Xavier accepted money from a group known as the Hellfire Club, whose hidden agenda was to use one of Xavier's students, Jean Grey, as a conduit to bring the Phoenix into the world. Xavier negotiated the appeal of the Sentinel program and battled Magneto when the mutant terrorist attacked the White House. An avowed pacifist, Xavier led the world to believe that he killed Magneto, but in reality he gave Erik new memories and tried to re-educate him to a new, peaceful way of life.

During a publicity trip to Europe to promote his book, Xavier's failed domestic life came back to haunt him when his son, David, went on a rampage, killing thousands across the globe, dragging Xavier along at his side. The deaths of the innocents as well as that of his son caused Xavier to become disillusioned. He decided to close the school and undo the memory change made to Magneto.

He met with Magneto, who believed himself to be a school teacher in the Bronx. After talking, Xavier discovered that Erik, of his own free will, bought tickets to one of Xavier's speeches. Realizing that he had made a difference without using his powers to force people to follow his will, Xavier was given renewed hope.

However, shortly after Xavier learned the truth about his investors, Magneto regained his memory and lashed out at the world. Xavier was blamed for the incident since he lied about Magneto, and the X-Men were hunted by the Ultimates. Xavier was captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. but was freed by members of the Brotherhood during Magneto's pivotal attack. Xavier and other mutant prisoners escaped from the Brotherhood and helped to avert a disaster in Miami. The defeat of Magneto won the X-Men public acclaim. Xavier took advantage of the situation, making the X-Men into renowned heroes. In order to save face, the President pardoned the X-Men and offered to take the Institute under federal jurisdiction. Xavier, being a politically minded man, decided to play their game, though the motives behind his decision are suspect.

Later, after the X-Men battled the Ultimates over the incarceration of Lorna Dane, who was framed for murder by the Brotherhood, Fury decided to sever his ties with Xavier, forcing him to look elsewhere for funding. He was approached by Lilandra Neramani, the leader of the Church of Shi'ar Enlightenment, who offered a lot of money for the chance to examine and test Marvel Girl to see if she was the Phoenix. Even after the tests proved negative (falsely, due to a Hellfire Club agent), Xavier kept seeing Lilandra socially, and a romance began to blossom. Unfortunately, Cable, a future Wolverine, came to the present to kill Xavier, and kidnapped Jean as bait. While on the way to rescue Jean, Xavier revealed to Cyclops that he loved Jean, too, creating a rift between them. Finally, Cable got to Xavier, and detonated a bomb. Xavier's corpse was found by the X-Men, and he was buried near the school.

In truth, Cable had switched Xavier with a dummy body and brought Xavier to the future. What Cable plans to do with him is unknown.
