Kurt was captured by Weapon X and was turned from a boy who wet the bed into a warrior. Like most in the Weapon X program, Kurt was not there by choice. Kurt tried to escape and next to Wolverine, he got the furthest from the compound before being subdued. During the rebellion of the inmates of Weapon X, Kurt teleported into Colonel Wraith's helicopter, saving him from Storm's lightning. Kurt saved the Colonel because he did not wish for Storm to become a murderer. After Weapon X was shut down, Kurt turned down the offer to join the X-Men.
During the mutant persecution that came with Magneto's return, Kurt sought sanctuary with Moira MacTaggert. Like Storm, Kurt seems to have learned English from television, though that may have just been a joke that Moira made. Kurt was captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. and put in a cell next to Professor Xavier. After the Brotherhood liberated the prisoners, Kurt assisted in saving the inhabitants of Miami from a nuclear meltdown caused by Magneto. Kurt joined the X-Men at the point.
Kurt didn't really fit in, but became friends with Colossus. He was convinced by Dazzler to help her rescue Longshot from Mojo's reality TV mutant-hunting show, though Longshot turned out to have been the murderer Mojo said he was. Afterwards, Kurt seemed a bit obssessed with finding a girlfriend. He was then shocked when Colossus revealed that he was gay. Kurt was unable to even speak to Piotr, feeling betrayed that Colossus didn't tell him prior.
After Dazzler was impaled by Deathstrike and went into a coma, Kurt (Nightcrawler) became fixated on her, especially after finding out that his friend Colossus was gay. When Ali eventually woke up from her coma, Kurt was there, pining for her, but she didn't realize the depth of his feelings and brushed him off. Then Kurt convinced Ali that they had to escape the hospital, and he teleported her into a sealed cave, where he hoped she would stay until she came to love him. The X-Men found out about this, and confronted Kurt, who went nuts and attacked them. Eventually the X-Men freed Ali and captured Kurt, putting him into a medical suite under telepathic and electronic suppression, realizing that his time with Weapon X had scarred him deeply. However, when Magician attacked the X-Men and began to play with reality, Kurt's monitors were turned off and he woke up and escaped.
Some time later, Kurt helped a mutant named Pyro who had attacked a TV station escape an anti-mutant group and the police. Pyro told Kurt about the Morlocks, a community of mutants who lived underground. When Kurt found them, he had to prove himself as a warrior by defeating Caliban, which he did, but when Sunder found out he used to be part of Xavier’s group, and Toad arrived, he had both of them locked away. Scott’s team arrived to locate Toad, but they had to fight the Morlocks. When Sunder was about to kill Scott, Nightcrawler snapped his neck, but did not kill him. He turned down the offer to return to the Mansion and was asked to lead the Morlocks by Callisto.
After Apocalypse appeared and Cable returned from the future with Xavier, Kurt returned to the Mansion.
