Real Name: Jean GreyThough she could sense that the leader of the team, Cyclops, had affections for her, Jean instead gave in to her own desires for the charming bad boy, Logan. However, when Wolverine admitted that he was sent by Magneto to kill Xavier, Jean grew furious and broke off the relationship. After Weapon X subjected Jean to some of the horrors that Wolverine faced, she began to forgive him.
During Xavier's book tour around the world, Jean finally told Scott that she wanted to be with him, not with Wolverine. After the tour ended with a battle against David Xavier, the Phoenix began to manifest itself again in visions. Just when it seemed that she had suppressed it again, the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle captured Jean and the X-Men and used an arcane ceremony to attempt to unleash the firebird onto the world. Jean actually called down a giant firebird and began to speak in ominous tones about her new godlike abilities. She was able to sense and affect indivudual people for miles around, healing and stopping accidents with but a thought. Angry at Shaw and the Hellfire Club, she mentally located all of their assets and transferred them to Xavier's name. Then she incinerated the Hellfire members. Before Jean could rampage further, Xavier was able to contain the Phoenix again, though she appeared to have a stylized firebird burned into her chest (unknown if this is permanent).
When Magneto returned, causing the X-Men to go into hiding from the government, Jean's telepathy was so far advanced that she was able to hide all presence of herself, Kitty and Beast from an unwitting family of humans, even as the X-Men lived in their house for days. Then her relationship with Wolverine deteriorated again when she read from Kitty's mind that Wolverine might have intentionally left Cyclops to die in the Savage Land. After the team defeated Magneto, Jean tapped into Phoenix's power to save the people of Miami from a nuclear meltdown caused by Magneto - by lifting the entire reactor into the air. Even though afterwards Thor warned Jean about such power, she feels she has control.
Wolverine then returned to the Mansion, and Jean threatened to kill him if he ever tried to hurt Scott or even had so much as an impure thought about her. While speaking with Wolverine, a helicopter carrying black ops soldier who were following Wolverine approached the Mansion. Jean used the power of the Phoenix to destroy the helicopter, killing the two men.
Jean's power continued to grow, and she also grew closer the Cyclops, though she finally had to tell him to be more spontaneous, prompting a big kiss from him. Soon afterwards, Professor X told her he had been contacted by the leader of the Church of Shi'ar Enlightenment, a woman named Lilandra, who believed that Jean was the Phoenix. Jean agreed to allow them to test her, in return for the Church funding the X-Men.
