Real Name: Erik Lensherr
Affiliation: Brotherhood of Mutants
Aliases:
Relatives: Isabelle (ex-wife), Pietro (Quicksilver, son), Wanda (Scarlet Witch, daughter)
Powers & History: Erik can control magnetic waves, allowing him to manipulate metal at the molecular level, project energy beams of electro-magnetism, create forcefields and fly. Years ago, he became close friends with Charles Xavier. They left their human wives and worked together to attract mutants and then create a mutant community in the Savage Land, a genetically transformed island in the South Pacific. In the Savage Land, Erik used his genetic and technical genius to recreate dinosaurs and other extinct creatures and to construct state-of-the-art habitats for his mutant followers. He and Charles developed concepts for a new mutant culture, including an alphabet and language and a new moral code. Erik, however used more violent tactics than Xavier was comfortable with, and Charles betrayed Magneto to the outside world. When Erik found out, he retaliated by crippling Xavier, impaling him on a spear of metal.

Magneto organized his Brotherhood and made it clear to the world where they stood. He hired Wolverine to assassinate Xavier. After a massive Sentinel attack on the Savage Land, Magneto reprogrammed the robots to wipe out every human in the USA. While Magneto attacked the White House, his son, Quicksilver, removed Magneto's thought-protective helmet, allowing Xavier to attack him. The world saw Magneto explode in a ball of energy. In reality, Xavier gave Magneto a new memory and Magneto lived as a fourth-grade special education teacher in the Bronx.

When Beast unwittingly told the Brotherhood that Magneto was alive, they removed found Erik and removed his memory blocks. Magneto returned to the Brotherhood and killed the animal evolutionary Prosimian, then attacked his son (who had fled to the Ultimates) and set up a floating fortress for the Brotherhood in preparation for world destruction. While Forge built a machine similar to Cerebro to magnify Magneto's powers, Magneto sent other Brotherhood members to various museums and institutes to preserve the few items of culture and knowledge Magneto wanted to preserve from the human world. Magneto intended to reverse the Earth's magnetic poles and wipe out all those not inhabiting the Savage Land and his fortress. Because some of his men brought the wounded Cyclops to the fortress, the X-Men were able to stop Magneto. Erik then created a nuclear meltdown in Florida, but Marvel Girl (using the Phoenix) was able to avert that disaster as well. After Magneto was arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D., Xavier visited Magneto in his plastic prison. During their conversation, they spoke of things that prompted Xavier to erase some of the prison data. Before Xavier left, Magneto asked about Quicksilver, leading Xavier to believe that Erik still felt some affection toward his son.

Meanwhile, Magneto's followers Forge and Mystique made a plan to break him out of prison. They framed Lorna Dane for some murders by causing her powers to flare out of control, and when her boyfriend Havok came to rescue her, they used the inevitable fight between him, the X-Men and the Ultimates as cover to infiltrate the Triskelion. Magneto appeared to have been recaptured after battling the X-Men, but in reality it was Mystique using a magnetic power harness. Magneto actually escaped via tunnels along with Longshot, and they traveled to the Savage Land, where Magneto began to rebuild his mutant community. Later, when Magneto heard about Xavier’s death, he did not seem upset.
