Review: Ultimate X-Men #14

Real Name: Remy LeBeau
Affiliation: None
Status: Deceased (Juggernaut)
Powers & History: Gambit can charge an object with energy, causing it to explode. Most of the time Gambit uses his abilities for detonations, but he can also direct the energy to allow items to levitate, presumably because of air being heated from beneath. Remy is a street smart urchin who made a living by doing card tricks and general larceny. Upon finding a young girl whose parents were murdered by Hammerhead, Gambit became her hesitant guardian. When the girl was kidnapped by Hammerhead to cover his tracks, Gambit began to hunt the Mafia thug down. Before finding Hammerhead, Gambit was approached by Charles Xavier. Gambit refused to go with Professor X, but the Professor left Gambit his business card.

Hammerhead was hesitant to kill Gambit because someone called Nathaniel Essex preferred Gambit to be alive. Still Hammerhead and other thugs attacked Gambit. Remy took out the thugs with his card and then faced Hammerhead. He defeated the thug by using his power to charge the inside of Hammerhead's mouth. Gambit found the girl and took her to be cared for by some of his friends before disappearing into the night.

Months later, Gambit attacked the X-Men at an amusement park, even going so far as to blow half of Wolverine's face off, before abducting Rogue and bringing her to the Fenris twins. Rogue eventually convinced Gambit that Fenris was evil, and the two of them, who had been flirting heavily, left for parts unknown.

A few weeks later, Rogue and Gambit were stealing their way through Las Vegas when they chanced upon the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, owned by Fenris. However, they were confronted by Juggernaut, who had a crush on Rogue and wanted to be with her. Gambit and Juggernaut got into a fight and Juggernaut pitched Gambit into a building, collapsing it on him. Gambit was mortally wounded, and Rogue absorbed his powers and memories in a final kiss goodbye.
