Peter joined the Russian Mafia to support his family and because the criminals saved him from the firing squad. After one of the jobs went wrong, Colossus was exposed as a mutant when he was forced to armor up to deflect a storm of bullets. Jean appeared on the scene to recruit him for the X-Men. He joined the team, but eventually left because he felt unappreciated and because he loved a team member who could never love him. He went to work building cars back in Russia. Cyclops and Jean tried to convince him to rejoin the X-Men or to at least rescue the crew of a submarine that was trapped underwater. At first, he refused, but eventually he broke down and pulled the submarine to the surface. Feeling the high of being a hero, he returned to the X-Men, where he was instrumental in stopping the mad Proteus by dropping a truck on him. Colossus has proven a valuable member of the team, even struggling against Magneto's power to save Wolverine from the Master of Magnetism's wrath. He seems to have something important to tell Wolverine, but has yet to find the opportunity.
