Powers & History: Cannonball generates a forcefield around his legs which allows him to fly and become invulnerable.

Sam moved from Kentucky to Emma Frost’s school when his mutant powers were discovered. Sam was glad to be given the chance to study there because his parents had a hard time providing for his big family. There, Sam was given the codename of Cannonball and a uniform of his own and placed in a team that consisted out of other young mutants. Sam was the rookie on the team, but decided to help out when his teammate Lorna was suspected of murder. After Lorna’s innocence was proven, Sam was later seen at the Academy’s school dance and helped his team fight against the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Since Emma stopped all public service missions after Lorna's mishap, Havok began to go out in disguise and attack elements of Chicago's criminal underworld, and Cannonball joined him.
