Still led by Nick Fury, and employing the feared Mandroid armor, this S.H.I.E.L.D. once worked for the government, but was cut off for some reason. It then became an anti-mutant terrorist group, which kidnapped Scotty Summers and Elektra and tried to release the Legacy Virus into the atmosphere. They were defeated by The Six, and Fury's mandroid was sunk in the river. Later, however, due to the Goblin Queen's influence, both Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. were reinstated as government functionaries. Fury was promoted to General, and is carrying out an anti-mutant campaign cleverly disguised as rounding up mutants "for their own protection." This was revealed to be part of Xavier's plans to collect all the telepaths in the world and keep the Six out of his way.

Strangely enough, Jean Grey apparently worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. at one point. This must have been before Fury went on his anti-mutant crusade.
