Morph

Real Name: Sidney Jones?
Affiliation: Exiles
Previous Affiliations: X-Men, New Mutants, Avengers
Relatives: Edward (father), Mother (unnamed, deceased)
History & Powers: Morph has the ability to shapeshift his body into anything he can imagine. He can stretch, mold and recolor all of his body, or just a part. Morph can even change his outfit using this power. More importantly to a combat situation, Morph can reattach severed limbs. His cellular structure is apparently so undifferentiated that all the parts of his body are effectively the same, so cutting through a limb, or even his torso, is akin to cutting through a sponge. Finally, Morph has no scent, a fact that used to drive his world's Wolverine batty.

As a result of his abilities, Morph was able to avoid persecution for being a mutant, and was able to have a fairly normal childhood. This led to his cheerful and irreverent disposition, which while sometimes annoying, often helps to cheer up his teammates. Another component of his personality comes from the fact that his mother (who smoked) died from lung cancer when he was thirteen, and his father always pushed him to be "serious," which he apparently rebelled against.

Did You Know?
Morph is quite adept at using his power for sight gags, and usually shifts at least his outfit to match what he's talking or thinking about. However, despite his jocular nature, Morph is actually quite intelligent. Among the more well-adjusted and accepted of the X-Men, he even joined the Avengers for a short time, but eventually returned to the mutant team that had become his family. Unfortunately, he then became "unstuck in time" and was forced to join the Exiles in order to correct his timeline.

After the first mission, Morph became attracted to new member Sunfire, and flirted with her for months. They became closer friends over time until she finally revealed to him that she is gay. Though he was disappointed, Morph understood that her withholding this information was in a way, trying not to hurt him, and the two have remained friends, but apparently with less innuendo between them.

Recently, Morph revealed the ability to fly, but it is still unclear just how he manages this feat. When Sunfire was killed, Morph was angry at Mimic for not revealing the truth about the Brood he became (causing Sunfire's death), but eventually Morph forgave him. Morph also had a strange encounter with Magik just before her death, in which she explained to him her reasons for being so cold-hearted and then came on to her. Surprisingly, Morph turned Illyana down and settled for being friends.

While Morph is often a joker, he is clearly one of the more powerful Exiles, with the ability to manipulate his physical form into dangerous weapons, and with the resiliency to take a punch. On one mission, even his joking saved the day, when he told funny jokes to short-circuit the control disk that the Controller had placed upon the Impossible Man, allowing Impy to return the world to normal.

After the Exiles' detour through the House of M reality warp on Earth 616, Morph was part of the team that remained to chase Proteus, in Mimic's body, through the Multiverse. Heather eventually realized that since metal was anathema to Proteus and his possession process was telepathic in nature, a strip of metal implanted in the Exiles' cerebral cortexes would prevent any others from being taken as hosts. Morph, however, due to his unique cellular structure, simply pushed the metal into his head. How exactly this helped him is unclear, unless he was able to move his "brain" cells behind it by conscious effort. Regardless, this aspect of his mutation was nearly his undoing, as during a battle with Proteus (now in Hulk 2099's body) on the Maestro's world (another Hulk), Morph took a punch to the head that knocked the metal right out. Exposed to Proteus, Morph was quickly possessed. Worse, due to Morph's mutation, Proteus's raging energies did not consume the body, making him the perfect permanent host. Using Morph's shapeshifting abilities, Proteus was able to look like his old self for the first time in years. He also began to experience more of Mimic's love for Blink, and even shapeshifted to look like him to try to woo her. Meanwhile he killed the Atlanteans of Counter-Earth and was going to rule there when the forces of Order and Chaos tried to stop him. Luckily for Morph, Blink had Power Princess and Spider-Man 2099 re-program the brainwashing devices from Earth 712 (the Squadron Supreme's world) and she snuck it into his crown. The program forced Proteus's mind to only access Morph's memories, leaving Morph once again as his old self. He immediately returned to duty as if nothing had happened, and while Power Princess harbored some doubts, the other Exiles thought it more prudent to treat Morph as normal, and not risk saying or doing anything that could break the brainwashing.

Unfortunately, on a mission against an alternate Hellfire Club, Emma Frost noticed something strange about Morph's mind and released Proteus. Before he could orient himself, however, he was subdued and returned to the Crystal Palace for another round of brain-modification. While the Exiles still refused to give up and put Morph in the stasis wall, Blink chose not to use him for further missions, even though it left the team short-handed.

Reason for Being an Exile: In the disrupted timeline, his mutation destabilized, leaving him without coherent shape in a beaker on Beast's desk.
