Story: Judd Winick Synopsis: The team suddenly appears in Northern Canada. Mimic laments the loss of the wings he mimicked from Angel. Apparently, Calvin can only maintain five powers at once (see below for the problem with this). By mimicking the Phoenix, Angel's wings were lost. Morph asks why he doesn't just keep the Phoenix power, but Mimic explains that he has to have about an hour of close contact to keep the ability long term. In mid-sentence, Calvin vomits. As Morph cracks jokes, Blink asks if this is normal when Calvin loses a power. He says no and he doesn't know what is wrong with him as he continues to vomit. Nocturne and Thunderbird begin to feel vibrations and a rumbling that sounds like a jet. Suddenly, the Hulk smashes through the forest. Morph changes into a giant chicken (hah!) and begins to run. TJ fills Blink in on who the Hulk is and decide to try to keep from getting into a fight. However, a snap of a twig sets off “Hulk Smash!” and the Exiles start to fight the green giant. They, of course, get thoroughly pounded. Hulk runs off after knocking down T-Bird. As the Exiles regroup, they wonder why the Tallus hasn't spoken yet. This world's version of Alpha Flight comes onto the scene. Led by Wolverine, they ask who the Exiles are and what they're doing in Canada. Blink decides to tell them the truth about their situation. While they are talking things over, T-Bird sees this world's Shaman. T-Bird asks Shaman his name and finds out he is this world's version of himself. From a nearby vantage point, two figures in shadows watch the Exiles and Alpha Flight, waiting for the right time to strike. Back at the Alpha Flight HQ, Heather Hudson explains to Mimic that the reason he got sick was because he picked up on the gamma rays that created the Hulk. He recovered so quickly because of the powers mimicked from Logan. Logan is surprised that Calvin's claws are bone (Wolverine never found out that his claws were part of his mutation in this world). As Morph and Sunfire flirt, Thunderbird talks to this world's John Proudstar. Shaman tells his history and says that he knows how Thunderbird feels... after all, they're the same person. A short time later, Wolverine gathers all of Alpha Flight to tell them about their new mission. Apparently, the Hulk has come into Canada and while there, caused some serious damage and a few deaths. Wolverine allows the Exiles to help Alpha Flight capture the Hulk, as long as they understand Alpha Flight is in charge. That's when the Tallus begins to speak. Everyone who will go onto this mission to retrieve the Hulk will die. In their quarters, Calvin and Clarice figure they have to save Alpha Flight. Once again, Mimic has a hard time thinking of a person who is good in his world as evil. After a bit of flirting, Blink kisses Calvin and leaves him speechless. The men from the shadows talk about thier plan to raise the numbers of their organization, starting with Banner and hopefully grabbing some members of Alpha Flight while they're at it. They figures turn out to be this world's version of Weapon X: Sabretooth, Kane, and Deadpool. Review: I really liked this issue. This story seems to be off to a good start, especially since it seems that the Hulk isn't the bad guy here. The Phoenix story was too clean cut and had no surprises. I have a feeling this one will be better. The dialogue was excellent too. It was great to see some character development with Thunderbird. Hopefully that will be followed up. I also like how Mimic and Blink are getting together, and also how Morph and Sunfire seems to have a little flirting thing going on. The only problem I had is a minor one. Mimic claimed he can hold only 5 powers at once. Think about it... in issue #1, he used Jean's telepathy to operate the Cerebro that Magnus whipped up. In fights, we've seen him use powers mimicked from Cylcops, Wolverine, Angel, and Colossus, with a mention of the “Beast agility” in #3. Sorry, Judd, but that's 6 powers he had at one time. Calafiore's art was just as good (if not better) than McKone's. I really like his Hulk, especially the panels with him standing over the fallen Exiles and of him alone in the forest. Every issue, Morph's various forms get a chuckle from me, but this month's chicken was especially good. I'm anxious to this world's Deadpool and to see Blink's reaction to Sabretooth, considering how close they were in the AoA. I'm looking forward to see how it'll all play out.
