Synopsis & Review by CharleyX:
Synopsis: Phoenix II arrives in a future controlled by Apocalypse. She takes out the first scouts to see her, still woozy from time travel. Meanwhile, Apocalypse prepares to transfer his too-powerful energy to a new body, an event marked by a festival of debauchery. Over time, Rachel recovers and learns to despise this new world. She meets a young Blaquesmith and he offers to be her apprentice. She searches out Apocalypse and tries to murder him, but he's not there, and she is attacked by Prelate Nero. She escapes and is found by Diogenes Chang, a member of the Order of Witnesses.

Review:Well, it looks like selected limited series are going to get reviewed from here on in. I'm contemplating setting up a brief summary page for past one and others, but that's for later. Anyway, this issue was pretty good, although I wasn't crazy about the artwork. If you're going to put out an LS (and charge more $$) then at least get a penciler whose every other line isn't fuzzy and whose faces aren't different for each panel. Prelate Nero's power is really gruesome, but very useful. The main points that came out of this issue have to do with the supporting cast. First, we see Ch'vayre as a young man, and with a mutant power to grow. Also, he serves Apocalypse. This contradicts the theory that he was brainwashed and put into hibernation when he was shoved into one of Apocalypse's transformation chambers back in Cable #58??? Well, it doesn't have to contradict it, but it makes it more complicated. Whereas before Ch'vayre was sent by Sanctity to help Cable in the past (our present), and he had no bionics and didn't appear to have a size-changing power, or to be much larger than a normal human, and then it appeared that he went to serve Apocalypse when he awoke 2000 years in the future, it now seems that the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix and Askani'son must have taken place before he came back, meaning that he had worked for 'Pocy, switched sides in order to train Stryfe as best he could, and then come back, modified to pass for as normal a human as possible. Of course, it also possible that the Ch'vayre who came back was a totally different guy, but that doesn't seem like the way he was written. The second little blunder involves Blaquesmith here we see Rachel meeting him when he's a kid. That works, but the problem is that he's already deformed, short with the big eyes, etc. In past appearances (Books of Askani, IIRC) it's been said that Blaquesmith was the only man to learn the ways of the Askani (that much could still be), and also that he accepted the deformity that certain powers and knowledge brought with them because he knew it was necessary to his ability to teach Cable. Here, however, 'Smith is already in his gnarled shape. So what's up with that? Hey writers: review your continuity, OK? Finally, I liked Rachel's costume on the cover - a good synthesis of her previous ones. Also might help the transition back to her Hound one, which is what the Askani end up wearing. Other bits: the Order of Witnesses, apparently founded by Gambit. Too cool. Wonder how exactly they're going to help. Very interesting wrinkle in the whole plot. Finally, Apocalypse. I never really understood why he had to switch bodies all the time, but then I started thinking about it. First off, a mutant who lives so long and constantly works on his power might increase his levels so much that he's almost pure energy (see Storm on the cover to the upcoming X-Men Ages of Apocalypse issue). Then he would need a host body. Two, 'Pocy could have done this with tech, or if he weathered nuclear wars. Third, it could have been the ultimate power he got from the High Lord Ascension. Anyway, he would be so powerful that he would need hosts. Another thing: Apocalypse is upset that his ruling mutants have gotten soft and complacent, so he's going to shake things up to see who's worthy to survive. This seems to be the Legacy Virus along with its cousins that attack humans also. Glad they remembered that. Not bad so far, but could be a little better.
