Real Name: Jean GreyWeapon X would not allow Jean to remain captured and single-handedly stormed into Apocalypse’s stronghold to rescue her, losing a hand in the process. Furious at Magneto for not going after Jean, Weapon X left the X-Men. Even though Jean understood Magneto’s reasons for leaving her behind, Jean left with Weapon X. Upon her leaving, she telepathically told Magneto that she was leaving because Weapon X needed her more than Magneto did. The two were then approached by Sinister, who wanted them to deliver vital information to the Human High Council.
Upon arriving in Europe, they found the Human High Council and delivered the information. While waiting for the information to be analyzed, Jean and Weapon X offered to undertake the dangerous mission of crippling Apocalypse’s sea wall. While there, Jean was ambushed and nearly killed by Prelate Alex Summers (Havok). After succeeding in their mission, Jean and Weapon X were told of the Human High Council’s plan to launch a nuclear strike against North America.
While Jean agreed that Apocalypse had to be stopped, she was not going to sit idly by and watch those innocent prisoners in Apocalypse’s pens die as well. She snuck back into Apocalypse’s empire and broke into the pens with hopes of freeing everybody. While there she was again attacked by Havok and taken prisoner. Havok tried to have his brother Cyclops kill Jean as proof of his loyalty to Apocalypse. When Cyclops refused, he was imprisoned as well and both were handed over to the Beast. They managed to escape soon after and vowed to free the pens or die trying. Jean went and single-handedly destroyed the Brain Trust, a device designed to remove the willingness to escape from the pens fueled by the brains of five telepaths. Jean and Cyclops then led a massive evacuation of the pens. Unfortunately, Jean was attacked and seemingly killed by Havok just before the bombs fell.
Unknown to everybody but Magneto (and Sinister), it was Jean that stopped the bombs from detonating. She did this by unlocking the tremendous power of the first mutant (Mutant Alpha) within her. Everybody thought that Magneto was the one that actually stopped the bombs. Seeing the chance he had to build a better future, Magneto claimed that it was him. Sinister, whose labs had recorded the event and knew Jean was responsible for saving everybody, blackmailed Magneto. For not revealing Magneto’s deception to the world, Magneto would never seek Sinister out. The reason for this was because Sinister had finally found the presence of Mutant Alpha in Jean. This was what he’d been looking over a century for. Wanting this power for himself, Sinister unearthed Jean (the power of Mutant Alpha kept her barely alive) and brainwashed her. He then used her to brainwash other mutants. This ‘Sinister Six’ then fought the X-Men when Magneto finally decided to end Sinister’s life. Psylocke used her psionic daggers on Jean to unlock her memories. Magneto was arrested for his conspiracy with Sinister and Jean was asked to lead the X-Men in his absence.
