Real Name: Remy LeBeauAs a young boy Gambit was adopted by the Thieves Guild of New Orleans. Holocaust was the heir to the throne, and in battle for succession he slew Candra, the Immortal benefactor of the Guild. Gambit then fled for his life, and later found sanctuary with the wandering nomads known as the X-Men.
With the X-Men, he and Rogue became extremely close to the team leader Magneto, even closer than his own son. After Logan and Jean left the X-Men, Magneto's behaviour began to worry the team, particularly Gambit. When Magneto became wounded in battle Gambit took over the team and called a retreat, though he was later chastised by Magneto for being undisciplined. The team urged Magneto to rest, and Gambit reminded him that he was the one who awakened him to the 'dream' in the first place. He asked Rogue to come for a chat with him but she refused, telling him there were some things she needed to talk about with Magneto.
Iceman later messed with Gambit about his feelings for Rogue, asking just how he planned to get around her powers. Gambit however wasn't worried, as Magneto was working on a way for her to control them. However he was unsure if Rogue knew just how deep his feelings were for her. He later on demanded a commitment from her but she ran off in confusion. Quicksilver suggested having talk with his dad, which he tried to do, but Magneto told him to either join in the training session or get out. Afterwards Gambit asked him about Rogue, but Magneto avoided the subject. Then rogue herself then showed up, asking to speak with Magneto privately. He then told to her he had found a way to touch her, by erecting a magnetic shield around himself.
Gambit burst back in in a rage, accusing Rogue of choosing Magneto simply because she promised Wanda on her deathbed that she'd look after him. She slapped him but before things could go any further they were attacked. The team went out into the battle, where Wolverine was leading a band of enhanced humans. He attacked Magneto and then Rogue, though he was stopped by Gambit. Magneto tried to help but then Rogue was taken hostage, and the two men were forced into a corner. When Rogue came to she instinctively grabbed Magneto and flew off, leaving Gambit to be buried under the wall as Wolverine attacked. He then told Rogue he'd let Magneto live if she gave herself up, but Gambit escaped from the rubble just in time and punched him in the back. Wolverine laughed at his feeble attempt, before realising that Gambit had placed a charged up rock in his belt, which then killed him.
Rogue tried to apologise to Gambit but he cut her off. He told her that all his life he was a loner, then just as he found someone to love, she loved someone else. Just his luck, he was depressed from this and then he decided to leave the X-Men.
Years later, Gambit received a request from Magneto to come see him. He went to Angel's club to find out Magneto's whereabouts. Angel got angry that Gambit thought he would know about the whereabouts of a genetic terrorist, but Gambit grew angry as well, reminding him that he owed him from when they met in Louisiana years before. Angel finally told him, but also told him he didn't want to see him again.
Gambit found his way to the X-Men base, just as Bishop was showing Rogue and Magneto visions of the 'true' reality. He burst in and saved Rogue, but instead of gratitude she asked him why he had come back. Before he could answer Sabretooth ran in and picked him up, threatening to kill him. Quicksilver told Sabretooth to put him down, that Magneto had requested him. Gambit continually made fun of him while Magneto told him that he had need of Gambit's skills. He then asked them to all leave him for a moment, but Gambit told him he didn't come all this way just to be told to leave. Even Rogue questioned why he was telling her to leave, and Gambit reminded him that even he would hold Magneto to his promise of never letting anything come between him and Rogue.
Gambit was then shocked to learn that Magneto and Rogue had a child together, and Sabretooth taunted him back about not being invited to the shower. Gambit and Rogue later shared a tender goodbye, as Gambit found out what Magneto wanted and it was likely he would never see her again.
Later, Magneto headed back with Gambit to the X-Ternal headquarters. He revealed he needed Gambit and his friends to steal the biggest jewel in the universe, the M'Kraan Crystal. The team were led through the Morlock tunnels to a secret door, where Apocalypse's Science Chamber was housed. Once inside they were attacked, though it was nothing much they couldn't handle. Apocalypse's librarian, whom had helped Magneto to get in, informed him of his search for the Shi'ar Galaxy. It was then revealed to Lila that she was a mutant, and the team helped her to bring her powers back to the forefront. However just as they were doing so they were attacked again. In the midst of the battle Lila's powers kicked into action, dragging the X-Ternals and their enemy Rictor into it, transporting them through space to the Shi'ar Galaxy.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire, the X-Ternals found themselves face to face with the angry Imperial Guard. The team ran from the scene, only getting a break when Guido managed to smack Gladiator away. However they then ended up in a living forest, which held them captive until a man named Jonath, half Shi'ar and half Mephisitoid freed them. He explained to them about the M'Kraan Crystal, that D'Ken could not control it and that it was eradicating the universe piece by piece. The Imperial Guard attacked once again, but the Crystal began to take it's effect, turning those around the X-Ternal's to crystal, themselves only getting saved at the last moment by the Starjammers.
The Starjammers then teleported the team down into the Shi'ar stronghold to capture the Crystal. They fought their way past the goons left to protect the Crystal, only for Lila to get sucked inside it. Gambit decided to follow her in, then followed by Deathbird, D'Ken's sister and leader of the Starjammers. Inside it a man named Jahf told the pair he had been waiting for them. He explained to Gambit about the Crystal and why things were in such a bad state, as Jean was never able to become the Phoenix and repair it as she had in the regular universe. Because of that, every other reality had been affected and they were all collapsing in on each other. Jahf revealed to Gambit that he had to make a trade with the Crystal before he could be allowed to take a piece of it back, though Gambit did not think he had anything to give. After some hints from Jahf, Gambit finally realised what it was he could give, and he gave up his love for Rogue, the one person he could never let down. The Crystal accepted the offer, and gave Gambit a shard to take back home.
Lila then transported the team back to Earth, to the tunnels under the city. Gambit gave the Crystal shard to Jubilee and Guido to give to Magneto, while he and Lila became decoys to draw Rictor away. However Guido later revealed himself to be a traitor, taking both the Crystal and Charles, Rogue's baby, to give to Apocalypse. The sewers around them however began to collaspe, and left with the choice of Charles, the Crystal or Lila, Gambit decided to save Lila, knowing Guido could protect Charles from the crash and keep the Crystal safe, even if it meant he was not to have it. He and Lila were later found by Dazzler and Exodus and brought to the Mansion, where Rogue could barely control herself from lashing out at Gambit for letting Charles go.
The X-Men then later broke their way into Apocalypse's stronghold, and while a few members went into the Crystal to fix time, Gambit and the others remained outside to protect it. Going mad, Colossus tried to break his way in to see his sister, though Gambit attacked him. Going insane when he thought his sister was dead inside the Crystal, Colossus even killed his wife, leading Gambit to charge up some debris on his back to kill him.
While Bishop had gone through the Crystal fix the timelines, humans threatened to destroy the world with nuclear bombs, but they were stopped. Everyone assumed it was Magneto who saved them, and he became a public hero. A year passed and humanity and mutantkind worked together to rebuild the Earth. During this time the few remaining heroes joined together in one team of X-Men, working under Magneto's leadership to wipe out all of Apocalypse's remaining supporters. The last stronghold remained the Sinister Six. Sinister had somehow managed to capture Jean Grey before she died, and it had been Jean who stopped the bombs, not Magneto. In one final, brutal battle their victory was secured, but at a cost. Both Gambit and Quicksilver, sadly lost their lives, but the Age of Apocalypse was finally ended, the survivors able to live happily.
