Real Name: UnknownThe man known as Enrique was born a Jew in Venice. In his early years, he wandered out of the ghetto and became lost. A kind-hearted priest adopted him and in fact had him baptized before realizing he was a Jew. When Enrique's family came to claim him, the priest, faced with a real theological dilemma, refused to return the child.
So Enrique was raised as a Catholic. It appeared to all that his faith was sincere and he eventually became a priest. What everyone failed to notice was that he was a witchbreed of extreme power.
Records of his early adulthood are largely missing, but a few important facts have come to light. At some point he fathered two children, Wanda and Petros, possibly twins, and managed to keep the truth of their parentage absolutely secret, even from the children themselves. He also had an encounter with the Spaniard, Carlos Javier. There is evidence that they were close friends for a time, but their relationship ended badly when they embraced radically different philosophies on how to deal with the growing population of witchbreed.
At some point, "Father Enrique" joined the Inquisition, setting his offices at Domdaniel Castle in Spain. At this point, his history starts to become clear again. He is a man of extremely complicated motives, and how he came to decide on his course of action is anyone's guess. However, it is clear in retrospect that his belief in the importance of the witchbreed led him to drastic measures. In his position as Grand Inquisitor, he had access to all of the witchbreed captured by the Inquisition under his direction. He used his position to safeguard the ones who could pass as human. He apparently had many of them sent off to an experimental colony in Newfoundland, far away from the eyes of the church. He eventually used his position to recruit his own children into his authority. His protection came at a heavy price however. In order to keep up appearances within the Inquisition, he was willing to sacrifice the witchbreed who appeared inhuman. Many of them burned at the stake under his orders.
In the year 1602, the political climate in England and Scotland presented him with an intersting opportunity. Queen Elizabeth, highly tolerant of Witchbreed, would soon die. James of Scotland, a Protestant with great hatred for the witchbreed, would inherit the throne. It was obvious to all that witchbreed in England, who had enjoyed relative freedom under Elizabeth, would soon be persecuted again. The Inquisition had no power on the island of Britain, but Enrique felt he could deal with James to have all of the witchbreed turned over to the Inquisition - particularly the band lead by Carlos Javier. Javier's students had recently liberated a winged witchbreed from execution by the Inquisition.
He sent Petros to Scotland to negotiate with James. James had every intention of dealing harshly with the witchbreed, but feared that the general population would react unfavorably to the cleansing. Enrique had Petros promise James that the Inquisition could manufacture evidence showing that the witchbreed were about to undertake a program of terrorism, in exchange for James' promise to turn custody of the witchbreed over to the Inquisition. James agreed - on the added condition that the Inquisition would expedite the death of Elizabeth. Fortunately for Enrique, the queen was soon assasinated by Otto Von Doom, apparently fulfilling his part of the bargain for him. Unfortunately, James had no intention of holding up his end. But this betrayal was soon to be made a moot point by another much deeper betrayal.
The Vatican had somehow become aware of Enrique's negotiations with the Protestant, James. The Pope sent the monk, Brother Tomas, to deal with the situation. Tomas was supposed to execute the Grand Inquisitor, but found it rather difficult to attack a master of magnetism with a steel weapon, and was killed instead.
After the disappearance of Brother Tomas, someone became aware that Petros was running messages between the Inquisitor and a servant in the Vatican referred to as "Toad" (real name lost to history). Toad was captured and forced to divulge all he knew of the Grand Inquisitor and his two assistants.
All three were then captured by an unidentified agent, perhaps another Inquisitor. At the stake, about to be burned, Enrique finally revealed the true extent of his power. He easily removed the chains binding himself, Wanda, and Petros, and the three then handily defeated the soldiers and priests who were to have carried out their execution. Enrique, Wanda, Petros and Toad then quickly fled from Spain, intending to sail to their haven in Newfoundland.
The bizarre weather patterns blew them well off course, and they instead found themselve en route to the Roanoke colony on the Chesepeake Bay. Javier's students intercepted them off the coast and encased their ship in an iceberg for fear of what Enrique might do among them. However, it soon became apparent that his unique ability was desperately needed on land. Javier and his students returned to the boat to negotiate with Enrique.
The former Grand Inquisitor agreed to help Javier in exchange for unspecified terms to be named later. Having no choice, Javier agreed.
They all returned to shore and Enrique was presented with the problem. The strange weather patterns, which were steadily worsening and threatening the world's very survival, were the result of a broken time-travel event. In particular, the Indian Rojhaz was not of their time. In order to save their world, Rojhaz had to be returned to his own century. The gateway through which he had arrived was still present, but electromagnetic forces were needed to make it open. Enrique and Thor lent their specific abilities to the situation, successfully manipulating the gateway and ending the threat to their world.
After the climactic events, Enrique told Javier his terms. They
were surprisingly simple. He intended to join the colony in
Newfoundland. All he wanted from Javier was to be left alone,
and for Javier to train Wanda and Petros - but never to reveal that
he was their father. Enrique then embarked for Newfoundland at
the earliest opportunity and effectively sailed out of the
history books.
