Neuri

Wolverine in the Alshra
The Neuri are apparently a race of humans who thousands of years ago, evolved mental and spiritual disciplines that allowed them to connect with the spirit plane, or the Alshra, as they called it. Outwardly, they appeared as normal humans, though their bodies were capable of processing far more natural energy than their less evolved cousins. While mankind was warring amongst itself, the Neuri retreated to Siberia, where they hoped the barbarous hordes of mankind would not follow.

Neuri mutated and original form
To survive in the barren wasteland, the Neuri used their mystical abilities to transform themselves into lanky furred creatures with great tolerance for cold. Wth these new forms they built cities under the ice, and there evolved a group mind that they used to explore the cosmos.

In their mutated forms, which are still fundamentally humanoid, the Neuri can communicate telepathically and wield great mystical energies that can be used offensively, but are most often used for healing and creating. They are also able to give certain people who are close to nature a glimpse of the Alshra as they see it. Because they are in complete harmony with nature, they can travel over snow and ice without leaving a trace, and when they die their bodies disintegrate into dust. They also have no scent, at least not one detectable by as sensitive a nose as Wolverine's.

The Neuri group mind explores the cosmos

Unfortunately, while the Neuri's minds traveled the universe, mankind rapidly increased its destructive ways, and the Neuri returned to find their icy desert home polluted and dying. Food was scarce, and they went on the move again. However, some Neuri rebelled and killed humans, and after eating their victims became hosts to dark and evil forces. They made their way into Canada, and the other Neuri followed. The dark Neuri's bloodlust was so strong that it called to Wolverine's subconscious, and he went to Canada himself, only to find himself losing his grip on his sanity, feeling the bloodlust come upon him all the time.

Dark Neuri attack Wolverine

Finally Logan met the true Neuri, who showed him the Alshra and explained the situation. One of the Neuri went with Logan to track down his evil brethren, and was able to use his powers to heal Wolverine's body and repair his clothes after Logan killed most of the dark Neuri. This Neuri was later killed by the surviving evil Neuri, who had absorbed all of his comrades' power and had become a seething mass of bubbling energy, dark in form and more powerful than ever. Wolverine finally killed this entity by inflicting severe damage with his claws and causing an avalanche in the cave they were in.

Some time later, Meggan and Phoenix III came upon a Neuri in England who had been trapped seventy years before by gypsies whom he had saved from bandits. The gypsies forced him to use his powers to give them wealth, but it only led to their ruin. Finally he was left with two brothers, who knew enough magic to keep the Neuri bound to their will, but little else. The Neuri was able to show Meggan her true form via the lens of the Alshra, and died after the mutants scared off the gypsies and freed their captive.
