"Dead Man's Switch, Part 5"
By Gail Simone and UDON Studios

Synopsis & Review by Jordan Williams. Thanks!
Synopsis: Mary Zero drags a dying Alex Hayden through Alpine Park, all the while crying and apologizing that she cannot help him since no one can see or hear her. A car pulls up and Arcade and his entourage step out. Arcade introduces himself, telling Hayden that Sandi said they needed an 'extreme-ride specialist' for the park.

In the Kenichi Building, Higashi and Saguri are having a bitter argument: Saguri is vehemently against Higashi's romantic pursual of Sandi as she believes that it is a disgrace to the recently-dead Lady. Some Henchmen arrive with Taskmaster, who has demanded to speak to Higashi. TM understands that the syndicate wants revenge against both Wade Wilson and Alex Hayden, and he offers to give them both.

Back in Alpine Park, Arcade uses a pocket knife to make an incision in Hayden's throat. He then inserts a pen (minus ink tube) into the hole, thus enabling Alex to breath and regain consciousness. He stands up, still extremely woozy. Arcade begins to give him an estimate on the work for the theme park, but realizes he needs a pen. Hayden pulls the one out of his throat and offers it to Arcade before collapsing once again.

In the Kenichi building, Saguri is enraged, having just been told by Taskmaster that Deadpool and Hayden are the same person. TM tells Higashi that he doesn't care what happens to Hayden, but he wants Sandi to be kept safe. Higashi tells Taskmaster that Saguri's vengeance against those who aided in the death of the Lady will be nearly limitless: anyone who was involved, including Sandi, will be pursued by the Corporation until they are dead. The crime lord reminds Taskmaster that they have twenty thousand men around the world, and that there is no hiding from them. He suggests that Taskmaster change Sandi's identity and appearance and leave the city immediately.

Meanwhile, Arcade tells Hayden that the upgrades to his park will be quite costly. Hayden, still unable to speak, writes a note to Arcade, promising that he will come up with the required funds.

Back in the Kenichi Building, Saguri turns on Higashi, accusing him of being too weak to see the truth about Hayden and Wade. She tells him that she is mobilizing every hired mercenary that they possess to kill anyone involved in the Lady's assassination. Higashi asks what will happen if he orders her not to hurt Sandi. In reply, Saguri ominously warns him not to.

Outside, Taskmaster is led into a car by Wei and some other henchmen. They promise it is just a 'courtesy escort', but TM knows otherwise. He slams his fists into the guards to the right and left of him and catches their guns in mid-air. He then blows Wei and the driver away before turning to a barely-conscious guard and demanding information from him. A little later, Taskmaster calls Hayden, warning him to get to Sandi and protect her.

Sandi answers the phone in her apartment: it's Taskmaster, and he orders her to get out of the building right away. Before she can, three men and a woman in combat gear crash through the window. She is able to smash one in the face with a fireplace poker before locking herself in the bathroom. The hitmen and woman try to coax Sandi out of hiding while Alex slips through the window into the bathroom with her. The assassins outside see that a note is being slipped under the door. It reads "What goes snap crackle and pop?" Another note follows saying "Your collarbone!" Just then, Alex sends the toilet flying through the door, smashing one of the hitmen into unconsciousness (or death.) The female assassin is pelted with bathroom supplies before getting the same toilet in the face. The final assassin also falls prey to the porcelain weapon. Sandi finds a knife with a message scratched in it: "Alpine Park at Dawn." In response, Alex writes "I accept" on a piece of paper, attaches it to a toilet cleaner and shoves it straight up an assassin's ASS. In the car, Alex uses another note to tell Sandi to contact Outlaw and Taskmaster and get them to meet at the Park.

At Alpine Park, Outlaw uses tweezers to remove the bullet lodged in Alex's throat. Outlaw shows Alex a note she found by the gate. It's from Mary, who says that she went to get help. Meanwhile, Sandi is angry at Taskmaster for telling Higashi that Wade and Alex are the same. TM admits that he was an idiot, and apologizes. The four sit down and debate what to do. They ultimately decide that they are all sticking together to fight it out and protect Sandi no matter what. By dawn, Outlaw, Alex, and Taskmaster are heavily armed after two certain phone calls. A car pulls up filled with three men. Taskmaster becomes cocky, proclaiming that it will be an easy battle. Just then, more cars and a forklift carrying a giant box arrive. Outlaw realizes that they have no chance of surviving. Alex cocks his assault rifle and, having regained his voice, suggests that they "get a little CRAZY!"

Review: A great issue, probably the best one since #1. As always, the art is excellent, especially during the action sequences. It was fun to have Arcade in this issue, not as a villian but as an unlikely ally. It was clever of Simone to bring back this old character for a purpose other than simply fighting. As always, the book included some genuinely funny lines, such as Arcade's "What sort of complete bastard sets fire to an innocent carousel?" The tone of this issue keeps consistent to the dark humour that Simone has established, carried on with such antics as Hayden using a toilet to smite his enemies and shoving a cleaning brush up a bad guy's ass! I feel that the tension was well-built with this issue, especially with the mention of how massive Higashi's syndicate really is. It gave the impression that Hayden was up against an almost unbeatable foe. Sure it's easy to beat the crap out of a few super villian teams, but what about a crime syndicate with 20 000 people around the world? The ending was great. Three mercs, outnumbered and outgunned against unknown enemies, back to back and ready to fight it out to the death. The shots of Outlaw, Taskmaster and Hayden standing at dawn, heavily armed was very cool. There's something great and darkly funny about a character being ridiculously well-armed. Overall a very good issue, and I will be sad to see Simone leave the title.
